Case Studies

Custom automotive prototype parts

01

Automotive Front Grille

These automotive front grille parts were produced by vacuum casting. The material selected is black ABS-like, due to its strength, light weight, and smooth surface finish, which is close to real ABS. The entire process was completed within 15 days from the master made and deburs, etc., for a 20-piece low-volume batch manufacturing.

02

Automotive Light Prototype

The automotive light prototype sample was produced by CNC machining, milling transparent PMMA (acrylic) and ABS. After milling parts, the PMMA part was polished to a mirror surface, and the plastic ABS frame with surface finishing chrome-plated, and all parts were assembled. From programming machining to final inspection, the whole production time was taken within 12 days.

Custom Parts for the Automotive Industry

Our factory has 3-axis to 5-axis CNC machining centers, CNC lathe, advanced turning and milling, and vacuum casting devices. Are able to produce complex automotive parts in a geometric structure, with high accuracy, and tolerances can be down to ±0.005mm.

In stock materials of automotive-grade aluminum (such as 7075, 6061), stainless steel, steel, titanium, and engineering plastics (ABS, PC, POM, PMMA, PA66).

Manufacturing Workflow for Automotive Parts

Every automotive prototype is manufactured in our standard workflow for precision, accuracy, and consistency.

STEP

 1

File Review and DFM Feedback

Our engineering department reviews parts for a Design for Manufacturing (DFM) after receiving the drawings. Include tolerances, manufacturability, material selection, and so on. We found out the design issues before production started.

STEP

 2

Process Selection and Manufacturing

Manufacturing happens in-house at Xinprototype factory under ISO 9001:2015 quality controls, select the optimal processing strategy according to your part’s structure and requirements. Complex automotive geometry parts are milled by 5-axis CNC machining. For simple parts, we use 3-axis CNC milling for cost-effective. For plastic parts in low-volume batches such as 10–200 units, vacuum casting delivers fast turnaround and consistent quality automotive parts.

STEP

3

Surface Finishing and Assembly

Once machining is finished, we provide a range of surface finishing for your choice, including anodizing, plating, painting, polishing, and more. Available trial or final assembly as end-use products or services upon request.

STEP

4

Quality Inspection

Before shipment, our QC department conducts dimensional inspection and visually checks. Ensure everything meets the drawing requirements.

STEP

5

Packaging and Global Delivery (3-5 days)

After QC, parts are packaged with professional, safe, and shock-absorbent materials, with a carton box or a wooden box as the outside package. Then shipped worldwide via Express DHL, FedEx, or UPS. Most automotive prototype parts are delivered to North America and Europe within 3–5 business days.

Speed Without Compromise

The automotive market moves fast — so do we.

When producing prototype samples, we turn CAD designs into real parts in days, not weeks. so that designers can test or modify design before batch production.

For low-volume, our vacuum casting manufacturing don’t need for expensive tooling, producing parts from 10 to 200 units in weeks, not months.

Every project is tracked, documented, and delivered to match your deadlines, without cutting corners on quality.

Frequently Asked Questions About Automotive Prototyping

It depends on your purpose. CNC machining is best for precision automotive prototypes with tight tolerances (±0.005mm). 3D printing is good for early concept models to validate the design, with fast turnaround in 1-3 days, and a low production cost. Sheet metal is suitable for the body and internal electronic car parts. Vacuum casting is ideal for 10-50 pieces small batch of plastic automotive appearance parts.

Lead time depends on the method and the project’s details. Simple 3D printing of automotive prototypes part can be shipped in 1-3 days. CNC machining of automotive parts usually takes 5-10 days. Vacuum casting for prototyping takes 7-10 days; for low-volume batches, it takes about 10-15 days. Urgent automotive prototype parts can be delivered in as fast as 1-3 days. Contact us to confirm the exact day.

Costs based on the part of the size, material, processing method, complexity, and quantity. A CNC machining car part may cost $280 for a single piece. However, when increasing the quantity to 10 pieces, the unit cost may drop to around $170. The same drawing, if processed by 3D printing, may cost $200, while CNC machining may cost $500 or more.

At Xinprototype, regular automotive prototype materials include ABS, PC, PMMA, PU, PP, PA66/nylon, and PEEK. Metals include aluminum 6061/7075, stainless steel 316/304, steel, and titanium for high-performance applications. If you’re unsure which material suit for your project, we’re happy to recommend the right material according to your requirements.

Automotive prototypes are often made in small quantities (1-50 units) via CNC machining, 3D printing, or vacuum casting, without tooling, but unit cost is usually high. Production parts are manufactured by injection molds or die casting. The tooling is very expensive, and the unit part cost is low in scale, with thousands of pieces or more.

Please provide: 3D CAD files preferred in STEP, IGES, or STL; 2D drawings in PDF with critical dimensions and tolerances. Material, quantity, surface finishing, and any special requirements. We’ll send you a quote with a detailed lead time, unit cost, and shipping cost within 24 hours.
